Machado, in conversation with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, reaffirmed his willingness and that of his allies to engage in negotiations to ensure a democratic transition in the country. However, he stressed that this process must begin with the recognition of the results of the July 28 elections, where Edmundo González Urrutia was declared the winner according to the count carried out by the opposition and the verification carried out by international organizations such as the Carter Center.

He recalled the difficulties he faced during his election campaign. The opposition leader also referred to the political situation in Venezuela, urging the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to intensify its efforts to condemn the repressive practices of the government of Nicolás Maduro.

According to Machado, the IACHR, composed mostly of Brazilian representatives, has described Maduro’s actions as state terrorism. In addition, he denounced the repression against media outlets and journalists, as well as the imprisonment of numerous dissident young people and minors. According to Machado, Maduro feels untouchable by the repercussions of his actions and does not perceive significant pressure that would lead him to dialogue. He emphasized that the international community must increase its pressure so that the Maduro government recognizes that its permanence in power is unsustainable.
