IDB could finance projects of the Nicaraguan dictatorship, despite the fact that the US ordered a veto of loans and BRICS rejected Ortega

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) would be becoming the new lifeline for the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, through the “America in the Center” program, launched by that financial institution on October 24 in Washington, United States. The initiative will finance projects for all governments in the Central American region, including the dictatorial regime of Nicaragua; However, analysts believe that the Sandinista leader could be left “smelling his finger” due to the US veto of all financing for the tyranny of Managua.

The Nicaraguan regime has found the path to accessing new loans from international financial organizations difficult after the United States Government ordered its representatives before these financial institutions to veto any request from the Ortega-Murillo family for loans.

Trying to circumvent sanctions and blockades on his financing requirements, Ortega tried to sneak into the political and economic forum of emerging markets known as BRICS to benefit from that group’s bank, but he also failed when he was vetoed by Brazil, which prevented the dictatorship. join that platform.

In this context, the IDB launched the regional program “America in the Center” to finance projects that will benefit all Central American countries and the Dominican Republic, including the Ortega Murillo dictatorship.

The official media have deployed a real campaign with the news, selling the idea that the regime will now have access to the financial benefits of said program, but the economist and opposition leader Juan Sebastián Chamorro believes that the dictatorship could be left with only the news but without money from that program.

Chamorro maintains that Ortega could be left out of this regional program, which indicates that each country must seek access to resources and the financial entity will evaluate each case.

«The fact that a regional program has been announced does not necessarily mean that there will be financing for all countries. We see that they are happily announcing something that is not necessarily going to reach them. In any case, we are going to be alert and that the authorities of the Bank, the Board of Directors specifically, are alert of the notifications or the Executive Order of Bailén to veto financing to the dictatorship,” clarified the economist and former political inmate.

The opposition leader explained that the announcement of a regional program should not be interpreted as meaning that there will automatically be equitable financing for all countries.

Financing projects of the dictatorship “is outrageous”

For his part, the member of the collegiate spokesperson of Democratic Concertation-Monteverde, Eliseo Núñez, believes that the launch of this program with which they could open a window to the dictatorship to obtain financing gives the impression of “enormous naivety on the part of the IDB”, because in Nicaragua there cannot be any type of security regarding the information that the regime transfers about the execution of projects.

In this sense, it warns that, in a country where there is no judicial power or comptroller’s office, and where the projects are used as partisan proselytism, it is difficult to know if the funds reach those who should reach them and could remain in the coffers of the dictatorship to escalate. the repression.

“It is outrageous to give the dictatorship more resources because at the very least this frees up resources from another side of the dictatorship to continue with the repression,” denounced the opposition leader in exile.

The IDB program

“America in the Center is a regional program for Central America and the Dominican Republic that will promote regional productivity and integration, climate adaptation and resilience, and social development for youth,” explains a press release published on the official website. of the IDB.

He adds that the initiative was created in coordination with the governments of Central America and the Dominican Republic “to build a common development agenda for climate resilience and sustainable growth.”

During the presentation of the program, Ilan Goldfajn, president of the IDB, noted that the new program aims to “improve productivity and regional integration, strengthen resilience to climate change and invest in the social development of young people. In doing so, it will seek to mobilize resources from donors and the private sector.

«America in the Center will have access to financing from the IDB, but will also mobilize additional resources through co-financing, non-reimbursable funds from donors and access to resources from the private sector. In addition, it will optimize the resources of the IDB, IDB Invest and IDB Lab, including program portfolios and technical assistance, complemented by the generation and dissemination of knowledge to improve decision making,” the official explained.
