AREQUIPA, Peru – Avianca, a Colombian airline, reported on the restart of sales for the direct Havana-Bogotá route, which will begin operating on December 16.

In a statement cited by agency Prensa Latina, the company indicates that it will operate a daily frequency on A320 family aircraft, for 180 passengers. This will mean a total capacity for its clients of more than 2,500 seats per week between both destinations.

Last June, Avianca had announced that it would not resume flights between the two cities due to “operational issues.”

David Alemán, sales director for Colombia and South America at Avianca, indicated that the company was happy to be able to land in Havana at the end of this year with a new direct route that “will allow millions of passengers to connect from different parts of the world with the history, gastronomy and culture of Havana, through Bogotá.”

“It will be a daily flight and more than 2,500 seats per week, which will also allow us to offer greater and better international connectivity, fulfilling our commitment to facilitating access to flying by plane for more people,” he explained.

The delayed return of the Colombian airline to Cuba It represented, according to specialists, competition for other companies that offer the route to South America, such as Copa Airlines and Latam.

Flights to Cuba by Avianca began in 2012 twice a week. However, for January 2020, the airline announced suspension of operations due to possible US sanctions.

On October 23, 2019, Avianca announced that, as part of the financial structure to obtain a loan, its majority shareholder, Synergy Aerospace Corp., established the liability company in the state of Delaware (USA). BRW limited company, to which it unilaterally transferred all of its shares in the conglomerate.

With this operation “Avianca came to be considered as a company subject to United States regulations regarding the economic embargo that said country maintains against Cuba,” the company then added.
