MIAMI, United States. – Less than a week after the impact of the Hurricane Oscarthe city of Baracoa and other communities in the homonymous municipality woke up this Friday under intense rains and floods.
The rains began around 1:00 a.m. this Friday and, at 7:00 a.m., 128.8 millimeters of water had already accumulated, according to local meteorological specialists. “Unusual floods in the city and penetration of the river into homes are part of a critical panorama,” reported the Primada Visión telecenter, which showed images of the affected areas, including La Playa, Cabacú, La Granjita, La Pasada and Jamal.
“It has been raining non-stop since early morning. “Landslides and floods are reported in the town of Bohorque, Bermejal neighborhood,” the Radio Baracoa announcer published Adalberto Moreira Borges.
According to the weather report transmitted by Primate Visionthe intense rainfall is due to low cloudy conditions in the northeast flow and the passage of a tropical wave through the central Caribbean Sea.
The rainfall had already caused damage this Thursday in the eastern region, with the greatest accumulation in Palenque de Yateras, where 51 millimeters of rain were recorded. The floods not only affected Baracoa, but also towns such as Moa, in the province of Holguín.
These rains have further complicated the situation in the province of Guantánamo, particularly the municipalities of Baracoa, Maisí, Imías and San Antonio del Sur, which were trying to recover from the serious damage caused by Hurricane Oscar. The phenomenon, which was downgraded to a tropical storm after entering Cuba, left accumulations of rain greater than 300 millimeters, and even reached 600 millimeters in some territories, due to its slow movement through the region for more than a day.
The impact of Oscar was especially devastating in the municipalities of Imías and San Antonio del Sur, where seven deaths were officially reported. However, reports on social networks and non-state media They report missing people and families.
Last Thursday, the Civil Defense General Staff decreed the recovery phase for the municipalities of Maisí, Baracoa, Imías and San Antonio del Sur.
