The state of Rio de Janeiro has been hit by rain and gusts of wind since Thursday afternoon (24). According to the state Fire Department, in Nova Iguaçu, in Baixada Fluminense, three workers died due to the collapse of a wall at a construction site in Nova Iguaçu.
The works were taking place in an area owned by Cedae, the state water supply company, at the Guandu treatment plant. According to the company, the collapse of the wall was “caused by a strong and sudden gust of wind”. The three dead were workers at a service provider. A fourth worker was slightly injured.
According to the Fire Department, the Civil Police is investigating the case. Until 6 am this Friday (25), 140 incidents related to rain and winds in the state were recorded, the majority relating to falling branches and trees.
The State Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemaden), in Rio de Janeiro, is monitoring the situation. Isolated and heavy rain showers, accompanied by gusts of wind, are forecast across the state until the early hours of Saturday (26).
