After four days of the mining and peasant strike, how has the economy been affected?

Miners and farmers from different parts of the country have mobilized to show their rejection of some of the decisions that have been made by the National Government and that could have repercussions on both mining activity and other productive sectors.

In particular, The protests have been motivated by decree 044 of 2024with which the criteria are established for the creation and definition of temporary natural resource reserve areas. According to the protesters, this regulation would limit their ability to grow crops and raise livestock in these areas, putting at risk the livelihoods of many families who depend on this work.

The above would also exclude mining, so no mining project could receive permits to develop activities in the areas that are defined.

After four days of strike, the participants are waiting to reach an agreement with the Executive regarding this issue. However, Every day that passes the economy is more impacted by blockades that appear on the different roads of the country.

Economic effect

The main effect is being evident in the supply chain and in the distribution of merchandise.

From the Defense union for land cargo transportation (Defencarga) it has been mentioned that the days of the blockade approximately 140,400 tons have been affected of products, which translate into losses for the national economy close to 100,000 million pesos.

In the case of fertilizers, for example, the Colombian Farmers Society (SAC) assures that as a result of the strike among 2,000 and 3,000 tons of fertilizers per day They are not reaching their destination. This would have a direct effect on regions such as Antioquia, Boyacá, Norte de Santander, Santander and Cundinamarca.

In Antioquia, specifically, Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) warned that the gas supply could be affected in the populations whose supply depends on the so-called “virtual gas pipeline”, that is, where the energy is transported in conditioned vehicles.

Impact on coal

Within the framework of the International MetCoke Summit Colombia, Fenalcarbón warned that if the mining strike is not lifted in 15 daysthe situation could lead to a shortage of coal in some thermal power plants. This is because this mineral has not been able to be shipped due to the blockades.

“We were taking stock of the supply capacity in yards, we have spoken with thermal plants in Boyacá, they have storage to generate 30 days, but due to the blockades the coal trucks are not arriving and there is a possibility of raising alarms if the roads are not cleared in 15 days”said executive president of Fenalcarbón, Carlos Cante.
