A storm hit the state of São Paulo this Thursday (24). The Emergency Management Center of the city of São Paulo reported that eight flooding points were identified, all of which were passable. All regions of the city were on alert for flooding since 8:30 pm.
In Ourinhos, in the interior of São Paulo, winds reached 126 km/h. The municipalities of Jaborandi, Avaré and Taquaritinga had records of roofing. In the city of Gabriel Monteiro, a gas station lost its coverage.
In a note, the Civil Defense of São Paulo explained that the wind occurs “because of the heat and the great availability of humidity in these areas and also causes a sharp drop in temperature that is happening between Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, as part of the process of the formation of an extratropical cyclone that is occurring. This cyclone is forming between Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay”.
In Pirapora do Bom Jesus, in the metropolitan region, Enel, an energy concessionaire, reported that 23% of customers were without electricity. In total, at 9 pm, 53 thousand properties were without supply.
South Region
The storm with strong winds was also felt in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, which also issued warnings for today and tomorrow and the possibility of hail formation. Winds above 60 km/h were recorded across the region, with some cities recording gusts of more than 100 km/h. The highest value reported was 133 km/h in Igrejinhas, in Rio Grande do Sul. Erechim and Santa Maria had records above 100 km/h.
There were records of falling trees and flooding in several municipalities.
In Santa Catarina, Civil Defense reported that Ponte Alta, in Planalto Serrano, was one of the most impacted municipalities, with up to 200 roofed houses. In São Miguel do Oeste, in the western region, at least 30 properties suffered roof damage and falling trees were reported. In the city of Urussanga, in the south of the state, the roof of a municipal school was ripped off by strong winds and ended up hitting a neighboring residence, with no casualties. In Descanso, also in the west of Santa Catarina, four homes, an industry and a church were damaged by the winds. There was an interruption in power supply in several cities.
