Piura: They supervise the operation of water treatment systems in Chulucanas

In order to ensure the comprehensive health and safety of girls, boys and adolescents in the Piura region, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) verified the correct functioning of a special water treatment system for human consumption delivered to the as well as a kit that provides supplies and materials to remove accumulated debris and rehabilitate spaces affected by the occurrence of weather phenomena.

A total of 150 families benefited from the implementation of the MI AGUA system, which contains a 35-liter drum with a spout, a 20-liter bucket, a filter sleeve (retention of solids and bacteria), an alum stone and a medium commercial bleach. . In the case of the debris kit, 230 families received two shovels, a pointed pickaxe, leather gloves, 50 sandbags, among others.

“This region has been especially hit by the lack of care for the environment and, in this context, girls, boys and adolescents have been among the most affected. Therefore, together with local entities, we are seeking to provide the communities of Piura with the necessary implements and tools so that they can develop and grow,” declared Carlos Zegarra, Health Officer of UNICEF Peru.

The deliveries, which were carried out thanks to the support of the Government of Korea and in coordination with the Directorate of Environmental Health (DESA) and the municipal technical area of ​​water and sanitation of the Provincial Municipality of Chulucanas, are part of the actions that UNICEF implements in the national territory in order to comprehensively care for girls, boys and adolescents, especially those who are in a situation of greater vulnerability to the occurrence of natural disasters.

MI AGUA technology makes it possible to close social gaps, since with it, water suitable for direct consumption is obtained, which can be used to prepare food, drinks, wash and disinfect vegetables and fruits for raw consumption, wash kitchen utensils and for personal hygiene. Meanwhile, the debris removal kit also serves as support to the community to carry out tasks to reestablish services in emergency situations.
