At least five Uruguayans seek to leave Kiev while martial law prevails in Ukraine

cromo

At least five Uruguayans residing in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, have been trying for several hours to communicate with the honorary consulate of Uruguay in the European country without luck.

The Observer one of them was contacted and he narrated the situation, but he preferred that his name not be published. The Uruguayan who lives in Ukraine for labor issues stated that there are at least four other compatriots in the Ukrainian capital and that they all intend to leave the country.

After Russia decided to start the invasion in Ukraine, the Uruguayans tried to contact Uruguayan representatives to see the steps to follow but without luck so far.

When martial law was declared, the companies where they worked asked them to stay at home and not move. Kiev is one of the areas that was attacked by Russian bombing.

Uruguay only has an honorary consulate in Ukraine and until 2020 Ukraine’s affairs were handled from the embassy in Poland. However, this administration decided to close that embassy to reduce the budget and the representation in Romania remained as the reference for Ukraine.

Uruguay currently does not have an ambassador in Romania because the last head of mission, Omar Mesa, left that country in June 2021. The government has diplomatic staff headed by Marcela Dos Santos, charge of business, according to the diplomatic representation website. . Alberto Rodríguez is the designated ambassador.

The Foreign Ministry told El Observador that they have been working “for days” to try to locate the Uruguayans who are in that part of the world, although they had not been able to contact any of them.
