Saab asserts that in seven years of administration, 540 men have been convicted of femicides

Tarek William Saab, attorney general imposed by the defunct constituent assembly, explained that since 2017 when he was appointed to the position, the Public Ministry registered 1,279 cases related to femicides. He noted that of that total, 938 resulted in accusations against feminicides.

The attorney general imposed by the defunct constituent assembly, Tarek William Saab, reported that 540 men have been convicted of feminicide in Venezuela in the last seven years.

Saab gave details of the figure this Wednesday, October 23, during an event to mark the fight against breast cancer. He indicated that since 2017 when he was appointed to the position, the Public Ministry registered 1,279 cases related to this crime, of which 938 resulted in accusations against feminicides.

In this same period, he added, 6,102 individuals were convicted of violence against women. He noted that the MP made 62,671 charges in that period and granted 549,872 protection and security measures in favor of the victims.

The official called on citizens to report any act of violence to the MP, which has, he added, 70 prosecutor’s offices specialized in this type of crimes against women, as well as a “comprehensive approach service” for victims. He stressed that there should be no “conciliation” and that, on the contrary, the cases must be reported, given the risk that the perpetrator will reoffend and there will be a “fatal end.”

Last Sunday, Saab stated that the Attorney General’s Office received a total of 317,584 complaints about cases of sexist violence since 2017, which reveals that – on average – at least 100 new reports are registered every day.

According to the non-governmental organization Utopix, between January and July of this year a total of 104 women were murdered by people who were part of their close circles, a national average of one femicide every 47 hours.

The NGO has repeatedly called on the State to develop “urgent actions against the increase in sexist violence” and denounces the “impunity that often protects the aggressors.”
