The president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Dominican Republic (Copardom)Laura Peña Izquierdo, expressed this Wednesday her concern about the high rate of road accidents in the country that, according to World of Statistics, ranks first in the world with 65 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants.

In that sense, he said that since Copardom They want to develop collaborative schemes with the Dominican Institute of Prevention and Occupational Risk Protection (Idoppril), which, between January and October of this year, has reported 40,520 work accidentsof which 22% occur in the industrial sector, 17% in commerce and 15% in accommodation, food and beverage. That is, about 55% of the work accidents They concentrate on three productive sectors.

He said that the traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic have reached alarming levels, affecting not only the lives of thousands of people, but also the well-being of families, communities and society as a whole.
The Dominican Republic is among the countries with the highest rate of mortality by traffic accidents in the region, and “this is a reality that we cannot and should not accept.
Added to this situation is the growing concern about work accidents. Workers in sectors such as constructionmanufacturing and other trades are exposed daily to risks that, in many cases, could be mitigated with greater awareness, training and compliance with safety standards.
“Each workplace accident not only represents a compromised life, but also a loss of productivity and, most importantly, a sign that we must do more to protect those who move our economy with their efforts.
