DR at the UN: we cannot accept the “insane call” to stop the repatriations of Haitians

RD en la ONU: no podemos aceptar el «insensato llamado» de detener las repatriaciones de haitianos

The Dominican Republic emphasized this Tuesday at the meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UN) that cannot accept “the senseless call” made by Haiti and international organizations to the Dominican government to stop the repatriations of illegal Haitians.

During his participation in that international body to follow up on the haitian situationa, the Dominican chancellor, Roberto Alvarez said that if operations were reduced on this side of the island “it would be the equivalent of declaring an open border; encouraging greater irregular migration. We will never allow this.”

He recalled that, to date, in Dominican Republic There are 147 thousand Haitian students at the basic and primary level. «16% of the health budget has been dedicated to Haitians; “There are limits,” stated Álvarez when he detailed some of the work that the country continues to do in favor of the Haitian community. But he added that the crisis that engulfs the neighboring nation “is its responsibility.”

He chancellor assured that the crisis Haitian has worsened “due to the lack of timely and sustained support from the international community.” The official Dominican He also mentioned the words of the president Luis Abinader at the UN last September.

“It is unacceptable that at this point, the countries that have committed to the Haitian solution have not fulfilled their promises,” he noted. In that sense, Álvarez considered that, under the current conditions that Haiti is experiencing, with the delay in reestablishing order, without control of the territory, without completing the electoral roll, “it is not credible that elections will be held on the established date.”

Several weeks ago, the Dominican Republic began a plan with which it intensified the deportations of illegal foreigners and announced that the goal is to return 10,000 Haitians per week to their country of origin.

To this, not only the Haitian government, but also the non-governmental organization Amnesty International demanded that its immigration policy from Dominican soil be stopped. They pointed out that it is discriminatory and racist, violating fundamental rights of Haitians.
