Petro's government verifies information about the death of Iván Márquez in Venezuela

In the years 2022 and 2023, information circulated about the death of alias Iván Márquez, head of the Second Marquetalia, which was later denied by the guerrilla faction itself. The Peace Commissioner, Otty Patiño, said that “so far we do not have confirmation, but neither does we have a denial. The only thing we know is that he could have died as a result of a surgical operation.

The Peace Commissioner, Otty Patiño, told several media outlets that Gustavo Petro’s government is verifying the information about the alleged death of Iván Márquez, head of the Second Marquetalia, in Venezuela.

«It has not been confirmed, we have investigated in several ways. So far we have no confirmation, but nor a denial. The only thing we know is that could have died as a result of surgery“Patino told various media from the city of Cali.

According to Patiño, the Colombian Government has tried to confirm the fact with the members of the ELN delegation at the negotiating table, but they do not have continuous contact with Márquez. “They also don’t know anything because I think Mr. Márquez resides or resided in Venezuela and the fronts are in Colombia,” he explained.

It is not the first time that a version has been given about an alleged death of Luciano Marín Arango, alias Iván Márquez. In June 2022, then-president Iván Duque left him for dead, but a month later that armed group confirmed that he had emerged unharmed from an attack.

In October 2022, the former peace commissioner, Danilo Rueda, also confirmed through that newspaper that he had met with Márquez during the exploratory phase so that the Second Marquetalia could evaluate the total peace proposal made by Gustavo Petro.

In May of this year, Márquez reappeared on the public scene in a video during the Binational Forum for life, peace and biodiversity of the Amazon and Orinoquia.

After that video, Iván Márquez was in June in Caracas in the meeting prior to the installation of the dialogue table with the Government. In the images that circulated then, Márquez was affected in one hand and one eye.

According to what has been said, the attack he suffered in 2022 in a camp in Venezuelan territory left him seriously injured as he almost lost an arm, one of his legs was severely injured, and a splinter was reportedly embedded in his brain.
