SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez confirmed this Tuesday that another person passed away due to the passage of hurricane – later tropical storm – Oscar through the province of Guantánamo, which brings the number of fatalities to seven as a result of the meteorological phenomenon.
As revealed in an extraordinary meeting of the National Defense Council attended by the president, the deceased is from the Imías municipality, one of the most affected by Oscar.
“We learned of the loss of one more person in Imías, bringing the victims of this phenomenon to seven, which we deeply regret and convey our deepest condolences to family and friends,” wrote the ruler on his social networks.
To date, the identity of the victimwhich adds to the six people who died in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur during the passage of Hurricane Oscar. Among those deceased are three older adults over 80 years old, two people between 30 and 40 years old and a five-year-old child.
Although the authorities have not specified the causes of the deaths, images shared on social networks suggest that the victims They could have died from drowning due to intense flooding in the region.
After the onslaught of Oscar’s hurricane-force winds, a six-year-old boy, resident in Baracoahad to be transferred urgently, by air, to the “Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedraja” General Teaching Hospital in that territory and later to the Southern Pediatric Hospital, in Santiago de Cubaafter being seriously injured.
Yodelmis Furones Matos was wounded after the impact of a tree on the roof of his home, in the early morning hours. The accident caused a head injury, leaving him unconscious, the regime’s official media reported.
“Very complex”
“The situation is very complex,” said Díaz-Canel, adding that “the response of the Party, the State and the government will be unstoppable depending on the people.”
In turn, he requested “organization and speed” for the transfer and delivery of the donations that citizens contribute to the victims in the Guantanamo territory.
Guantánamo, hit by the meteorological phenomenon, experienced multiple damages to homes and hospitals and several deaths due to the lack of information among residents who had been without electricity service for several days.
The situation is made even more difficult by the solitary confinement in which several municipalities remained. Sinks and landslides caused the interruption of the road before Imías. Currently, access to Imías, Baracoa and Maisí is interrupted.
