The Commander General of Dominican Republic Army (ERD), Major General Jorge Iván Camino Pérez, reported that during the last month more than twenty people have been brought before the Public Ministry for trafficking of illegal immigrants.

Camino Pérez, who accompanied the Director General of Immigration, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester, during a visit to the border, emphasized the Army’s commitment to compliance with local immigration laws.

“In the last month, the Army has made more than 20 submissions to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, they are not only military members, there are members of Immigration, the Police, the Army, transporters and ordinary citizens,” he stated before members of the press.

He also maintained that the problem of trafficking of undocumented immigrants not only concerns the authorities but also society in general and must be combated while respecting the human rights of each person.

“In the immigration issue, in the issue of trafficking of undocumented immigrants, many sectors of society are involved, it is a problem that must be seen in a holistic, broad way. It is a scourge that must be combated by respecting human rights and trying to treat these migrants with dignity,” he said.

He assured that the national Army is responding “energetically and harshly” to illegal migration and will continue to respond with equal magnitude in compliance with the law.

“There are things in which, unfortunately, one cannot compromise because there is a law to comply with and a responsibility that we have as social actors. The army has given and will continue to give an energetic, tough response perhaps like never before,” he said.
