Irregular migrants return to Cuba from Mexico and the US

Cuban authorities today received a group of emigrants returned by Mexico, a country where they were in an irregular migratory situation.

On the same day, another group of people arrived on the island who were intercepted on the high seas by the United States Coast Guard Service.

A charter flight landed 116 citizens, 36 women and 80 men, at the José Martí international airport in this capital, who received medical attention and food upon arrival, before being transported to their provinces of origin.

In accordance with the protocols in force due to the Covid-19 pandemic, PCR tests were carried out at the air terminal, prior to customs and immigration control procedures, as corresponds to any traveler entering from abroad.

According to statements by some of the emigrants, most left Cuba legally at the beginning of the month, with the intention of entering the United States, whose government keeps consular services on the island closed.

To reach US territory, they became undocumented in third countries, including Mexico, which has tightened immigration controls.

Immigration authorities told Prensa Latina that so far this year there have been 15 return operations, for a total of 695 citizens involved.

They returned on 10 US Coast Guard trips (333), four flights from Mexico (326), and one flight from the Bahamas (36).

The sources themselves reported that the United States Coast Guard Service returned to Cuba today, through the port of Orozco, in the western province of Artemisa, a group of 42 people.
