The session is scheduled for 2:00 pm and will be led by Judge Zaida Pérez.

The Public Ministry accuses the former president of having received bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrechtin exchange for favoring it in the concession for the construction of the aforementioned sections of the Interoceanic Highway. In that sense, Toledo is accused of having received US$30 million between 2006 and 2011, through a money laundering scheme set up by his late friend, Josef Maiman.

The investigations against the former president in this case began in January 2017. In 2016, the Brazilian construction company admitted having paid bribes to Peruvian officials between 2005 and 2004.

Toledo was extradited from the United States in April 2023 and, since then, he has been held in the Barbadillo prison. At 79 years old, he is being prosecuted for the crimes of collusion and money laundering.

The Prosecutor’s Office, represented by the prosecutor José Domingo Pérez, has requested a sentence of 20 years and 6 months in prison against the former president, as well as the payment of civil reparation of S/ 1,375 million and US$ 463 million, which he must pay along with his co-defendants if found guilty.

This will be the first sentence handed down against a former president for the Lava Jato case. Likewise, it will be the second criminal sentence handed down against a former constitutional president. The first was against Alberto Fujimori in 2009.
