The president of the Dominican Humanist Party (PHD), Ramón Emilio Goris, declared that the Fiscal Modernization Project introduced to Congress by the Executive Branch must be agreed upon with the different sectors of Dominican society.
“Proposals on tax reform have to be promoted, explained and weighed in order to achieve consensus with all sectors,” he added.
He understands that the productive sectors have to give their opinions regarding the possible impact on their operations, “all this with the understanding that the tax reform cannot be postponed for this year and that President Luis Abinader is assuming a decision with full responsibility. that the economic situation of the country warrants.”
Goris, who is also president of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), explained that President Abinader is making, with this tax reform, a transcendental decision for the good of the Dominican people.
“We must protect the nation’s productive sectors and prevent the middle class from failing in their economic activities,” he added.
He argued that some reform proposals must be reviewed “to continue promoting the development of the country and guarantee a harmonious climate for economic investments, guaranteeing the survival of the most impoverished sectors.”
The president of the PHD and PARLACEN assured that the head of state is aware and knows in detail the reality that the country is experiencing in relation to tax pressure “and that those who have more should pay more.”
“In addition, there are very sensitive issues that cannot be increased because it would hit the employing and most productive class, which is the middle class,” he noted.
Finally, Goris congratulated President Abinader for the courage to face this reality responsibly and said he hoped that the congressmen “do a good job to successfully emerge from this unfortunate situation that the Dominican Republic is going through.”
