Haddad will launch green investment platform in Washington

Haddad: falling unemployment increases optimism in economic sectors

The launch of a platform to boost international investments in the green economy (investments in environmental and social projects) will be the highlight of Finance Minister Fernando Haddad’s trip to Washington. The minister will also make an announcement about financing projects to combat climate change.Haddad will launch green investment platform in Washington

Haddad, the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet, and the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, will travel to Washington to participate in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, from Tuesday (22) to Thursday Monday (24).

At the same time, the fourth meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Presidents of the G20, a group that brings together the 19 largest economies on the planet, plus the European Union and the African Union, will take place in the North American capital.

This will be the last meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Presidents, before the G20 summit in November in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil holds the presidency of the group until November 30, with South Africa assuming the presidency in December.

The launch of the Brazilian Platform for Climate Investment and Ecological Transformation is scheduled for next Wednesday (23), at 9 am (Washington time, 10 am in Brasília). The event will also be attended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

On the same day, Haddad will chair an IMF discussion on global sovereign debt. In June, the minister participated, in the Vatican, in a conference on public debt from underdeveloped and developing countries with high interest rates in the United States. Afterwards, the minister will participate in closed meetings of the World Bank and the IMF.

One day earlier, on Tuesday (22), Haddad will have a bilateral meeting with Ajay Banga, president of the World Bank. One of the topics to be discussed will be the International Fund for the Preservation of Forests, proposed by Brazil last year at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. There is a possibility that Minister Marina Silva will also participate in the meeting.

Risk agencies

On the same day, the minister will meet with representatives from the risk rating agency Fitch Ratings. At the end of September, Haddad and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gathered in New York with representatives from two other agencies: Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s.

On Thursday morning (24), Finance Ministers and Central Bank Presidents will discuss the G20’s financial path. The ministers will take stock of the trail’s 25 years of existence, debating the progress made and the guidelines for the future.

The week of travel will end with an event by the Global Mobilization Task Force against Climate Change (TF-Climate) and a restricted IMF meeting with Finance Ministers, in which the Monetary Fund will present global economic scenarios.

Simone Tebet

On Tuesday (22), minister Simone Tebet participates in a lunch promoted by think tank (institution that forms the bridge between academic knowledge and public policies) Atlantic Council. With an audience of company presidents, executives and associates, the event will discuss opportunities and challenges for the Brazilian economy. Afterwards, the minister will speak about democracy and regional integration at an event promoted by American University, in partnership with the Brazilian Embassy.

On Wednesday (23), the minister participates in a panel promoted by the World Bank on Global Food Transition and in meetings of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the institution in which Tebet represents Brazil.

On the last day of the trip, Tebet has breakfast with the Council of the Americas Institute, which brings together businesspeople, investors and chief executives focused on Latin America.

Afterwards, the minister will participate in a lunch promoted by the World Bank on the Amazônia Viva initiative, which will discuss projects and investments in the Amazon. On Friday (25), the ministers return to Brazil.
