A recent survey carried out by Datum for the newspaper El Comercio has revealed alarming figures on the perception of insecurity in the country.
87% of Peruvians surveyed said they felt unsafe when traveling through the streets, a percentage that rises to 94% in the areas of Lima and Callao, the most affected by crime.
The feeling of citizen lack of protection is aggravated by a deep distrust in the institutions in charge of guaranteeing security.
According to the survey, 87% of Peruvians do not trust the work of judges, while 86% expressed distrust in prosecutors. These results reflect widespread discontent with the authorities’ response to the growing wave of crime.
President Dina Boluarte also bears part of the responsibility, according to the opinion of those surveyed. 44% pointed to the president as the main person responsible for the lack of an effective strategy against crime.
Congress, for its part, was pointed out by 40% of those surveyed, while judges and prosecutors were held responsible by 31%.
