The president of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, Leonel Fernandezappreciated this Saturday the decision of President Luis Abinader to withdraw the Tax Reform project, hailing this measure as a response to the clamor of the citizens and the demands raised by the political organization.
In a brief message on his X account, Fernández reiterated that the reform proposal represented a significant setback and threatened social peace and democratic governance in the Dominican Republic.
“We welcome the decision of President Luis Abinader to withdraw the Tax Reform project, taking advantage of the clamor of the citizens and the claim that we made to him from the Fuerza del Pueblo, as it was a proposal that constituted a setback that put social peace at risk. and the democratic governance of our country,” wrote the three-time president of the country.
The party, meanwhile, highlighted that the reform proposal, described as a “fiscal bombshell” by the opposition leader, would have generated a negative impact on the national economy. Given the widespread rejection of Dominican society, Leonel Fernández asked President Abinader to reconsider his position and withdraw the reform, thus opening the possibility of a broad and constructive debate that would allow for reaching a consensus.

“With this withdrawal, we will now be able to advance in compliance with Law No. 1-12 on National Development Strategy, which establishes the need for a progressive tax reform, and not a regressive one like that initially proposed by the PRM government,” the political organization stated in a statement.
It is recalled that the party would have emphasized the importance of listening to the voices of the population and prioritizing dialogue in the construction of public policies.
