The Public Security Institute (ISP) released, this Friday (18), the new rates of violence in Rio de Janeiro, comparing data from January to September this year with the same period in 2023. From January to September, robberies cell phone numbers on the streets increased by 40% in the state of Rio compared to the same period last year. In the first nine months of 2023, 11,230 devices were stolen compared to 15,767 in the same period this year in the state.
This was the highest indicator recorded by the ISP in recent years, which leads the population to hide their cell phones or only answer calls in safe places, such as stores or shopping centers.
Until September this year, robberies in buses increased by 10% in Rio, compared to the first nine months of 2023. Last year, 4,265 robberies were recorded on buses compared to 4,700 in the same period of 2024.
There was also an increase in the number of stolen vehicles in the state of Rio: in the period from January to September 2023, there were 16,427 incidents of assaults on drivers compared to 21,251 this year, an increase of 29%.
The state of Rio de Janeiro recorded a drop in strategic indicators linked to crimes against life and property and an increase in police productivity rates, with emphasis on the seizure of rifles.
Violent lethality, which includes intentional homicides, robberies (robberies followed by death), bodily injuries followed by death and deaths caused by State agents, fell by 15% in the accumulated period and by 16% in the last month, compared to the same periods 2023. Such statistics represent the lowest number of victims for the indicator since the beginning of the ISP historical series in 1991. Between January and September 2024, 2,804 deaths were recorded, 489 less than the 3,293 recorded in the same time interval of the previous year.
In nine months, the police seized 577 rifles, the highest volume for the period since 2016. On average, two weapons of this type were removed from circulation every 24 hours. Compared to the same period in 2023, there was an increase of 18.5%. In total, 4,772 firearms were collected from the hands of criminals – approximately 17 per day.
According to Governor Cláudio Castro, the decrease in violent lethality and the historic high in the seizure of rifles are a reflection of the integrated work of the Civil and Military police and the constant investment in public security. “We will continue to move forward to reduce all strategic indices”, he stated.
