The current president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo, who aspires to continue in office during the period 2024-2028, was interviewed this Wednesday by the Special Commission of the Senate in charge of selecting the new authorities of the organization .
During his speech, Jáquez Liranzo highlighted several aspects that were left out of Law 20-23, Organic Electoral Regime. Among them, he proposed a possible significant reduction in spending ceilings and the strengthening of sanctions for political actors who exceed them.
“It was proposed that spending caps have sanctions and there are no sanctions. It was proposed that the limits were reduced so that the electoral campaign would be less impactful from an economic point of view. But, this did not materialize. “I think we have to give the JCE some grip,” express.
Likewise, Jáquez Liranzo considered that the regulations should include electoral precinct coordinators and political delegate coordinators, since their incorporation would facilitate agility in the holding of votes.
“I believe that it is time in an electoral reform to implement precinct coordinators, including the coordinators of political delegates in the precincts, this has made the dynamics of the electoral process more efficient and faster,” he stated.
However, the candidate highlighted that one of the main achievements of the electoral reform, with the approval of this law, is the classification of political violence against women as a crime.

In addition to Román Andrés Jaquez Liranzo, the Senate committee interviewed Nurys Forchue, Carmen Yannis Fulcar, Richard de Jesús García Rodríguez, Luis Rafael García, Prado Antonio López Cornielle, Hirayda Marcelle Fernández Guzmán, Nathanael Lora Mota, Feliciano Lacen Custodio, Patricia Lorenzo, Dolores Altagracia Fernández Sánchez, Milagros Hilario Liz and Lenis Rosangela García Guzmán.
According to the theme established by the commission, applicants will have five minutes to talk about their resume and the plans to develop, if they are elected to be part of the JCE. Subsequently, they will be subjected to questions by the members of the evaluation committee for ten minutes.
The questions addressed key topics, such as the current weaknesses of the JCE and proposals for improvement, the prevention of electoral crimes, the unification of elections, the D’Hondt methodthe drag system at the municipal level, and gender equality, among other fundamental aspects.
