Manuel Octavio Bermúdez, known as ‘The Monster of the Cañaduzales’, died on October 17 during an armed attack on an INPEC patrol on the Pan-American highway, which connects Popayán and Cali.

This individual, convicted of atrocious crimes against more than 20 minors, was being transferred from Popayán to Cali when his vehicle was attacked with long-range weapons.

The attack not only resulted in the death of Bermúdez, but also left a tragic death toll of two INPEC officials and an inmate.

In several videos circulating on social networks, you can see how the patrol was left after the violent attack. Trucks and vehicles passing through the area helped make the emergency call to the authorities and ambulances to go to the scene.

In another video, you can see the exact moment of the attack, where two dissident members approach the vehicle apparently with rifles.

The news of the attack has revived the memory of the horrendous crimes perpetrated by Bermúdez, who earned his infamous nickname for luring poor children to the cane fields of Valle del Cauca, where he murdered them.

It has long been known that Bermúdez was being held in the La Tramacúa penitentiary center in Valledupar, and so far no official information has been provided about the reasons for his transfer to Popayán. INPEC issued a statement regretting the death of its two officials, but has not referred to the transfer.

Criminal History of the “Moustro de los canañazulaes”

The authorities managed to identify 34 victims of Manuel Octavio Bermúdez, which earned him the nickname ‘The Monster of the Canaduzales’. His modus operandi consisted of abusing minors, hanging them with a rope and leaving them in the cane fields of Valle del Cauca.

In 2002, in Palmira, where he lived, the disappearance of 11 children between 9 and 13 years old was recorded. His job as an ice cream maker served as the ideal cover to attract his victims.

Like Garavito, he also pretended to be a vulnerable person, taking advantage of his limp to convince children from rural areas in Pradera and Palmira. Following his arrest on July 18, 2003, investigators were stunned when he accepted without hesitation that he had murdered more than 20 minors.

Although he tried to divert responsibility towards Luis Alfredo Garavito, the Third Criminal Court of Palmira sentenced him to 40 years in prison for the murder of 34 children, even though he initially recognized only 23.

It should be noted that ‘The Monster of the Canaduzales’ did not receive the prohibition of prison benefits for those who commit crimes against minors, since this regulation was established in 2006 with Law 1098 of the Code of Childhood and Adolescence.

In response, the Minister of Justice, Ángela María Buitrago, and the director of INPEC, Daniel Gutiérrez, met to discuss the safety of prison officials and evaluate possible preventive measures in the face of this growing threat.

Cases of this criminal

One of the most shocking cases was that of Andrés Felipe Serna, a 12-year-old boy who disappeared in 1999 in Palmira, whose body was found in a cane field.
