For his part, Roberto Remes, a mobility analyst, considers that the permanent driver’s license does not contribute to road safety in the capital, since there is currently a poor practice of driving motor vehicles and compliance with traffic regulations.

Last Monday, the head of government Clara Brugada announced that she sent to the Congress of Mexico City an initiative to modify the Tax Code with which she seeks to begin issuing permanent licenses for 1,500 pesos starting in November.

The initiative establishes that those who want to obtain a driver’s license in this modality for the first time must complete a road knowledge test, while those who already have a type A, non-permanent license, will be able to do so automatically, paying only the cost.

From this derives the concern of the specialists, since it is not necessary to demonstrate that one is capable of driving a vehicle on the streets of the city, since although an exam is proposed for those who process the license for the first time, it is only theoretical.

In that sense, Remes stated that it is necessary for governments in Mexico to have a policy more oriented towards the preparation of drivers of motor vehicles beyond an exam as proposed in the project.

“Currently they teach you to drive people who are not prepared for it and drivers do not have a theoretical basis, what we do with the permanent license is continue with an inadequate practice,” he said.

He also highlighted that the driver’s license, when used as an identification document, does not prove that the person who obtains it has the skills and road education for which it was issued, so it ceases to fulfill its function.
