The trial against Pedro Castillo for the coup d’état is coming

Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley concluded today with the control of the accusation for the coup d’état perpetrated by the former president Pedro Castillo in 2022 and announced that it will issue the order to begin the oral trial.

Former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, and former ministers Aníbal Torres, Willy Huerta and Roberto Sánchez are also accused in the case for the crime of rebellion.

Castillo, for whom the Prosecutor’s Office is asking for 34 years in prison, sought to illegally close Congress and reorganize the justice system on December 7, 2022, after a former official pointed out to Congress that the then president received money from acts of corruption.

It was Salatiel Marrufo, former head of Advisors at the Ministry of Housing and Sanitation, who pointed out that the former governor received part of the bribes given by businesswoman Sada Goray to obtain projects from the MiVivienda Fund.

Of those prosecuted, Castillo and Chávez are currently serving preventive detention. Torres, Huerta and Sánchez have a summons with restrictions.

At the end of today’s virtual hearing, Judge Checkley announced that he will notify the resolution that will formalize the start of the trial, the last stage of the criminal process.
