Liam Payne, British singer and former member of the youth band One Direction, died this Wednesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local police reported.
Payne, 31, died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in the capital of the South American country.
The emergency services were alerted around 5:00 p.m. from the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighborhood, where the singer was staying, who had fallen into an internal patio of the establishment.
The BBC had access to the police report of the officers who were sent to the hotel, which indicates that they arrived at the location after receiving a call in which they were “informed of an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
Once there, the agent in charge said he heard a loud sound in the inner courtyard of the hotel.
For his part, the head of the SAME emergency medical service in Buenos Aires, Alberto Crescenti, explained to local television that the artist suffered “very serious injuries incompatible with life as a result of the fall” and that there was “no possibility of resuscitation.”
Police said the body has been taken to a morgue.
Earlier this month Payne had attended his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan’s concert in Argentina.
From X Factor to becoming an international star
Liam Payne first sought stardom when he auditioned for the British show The X Factor in 2008, but the judge Simon Cowell He told him to “come back in two years.”
He did so, impressing the judges in 2010, and was selected alongside four other aspiring soloists: Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles.
In this way it was born One Direction. The band did not win the talent show, but quickly had great success on the music charts.
They published four albums that reached number one on the charts in the United Kingdom and other countries.
One Direction were one of the biggest groups of the 2010s, BBC music correspondent Mark Savage told Radio 5 Live.
They sold 70 million records and the songs that everyone knows, like What Makes You Beautiful, Story of My Life and Best Song Everdominated the radio waves.
In 2015, five years after forming, the band broke up.
“Liam was a key part of that band. He helped write many of their songs and of course had a very successful solo career after the breakup,” Savage said.
In 2017, Payne’s debut solo single, Strip That Down, reached third position among the most listened to songs in United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, his collaboration with Rita Ora on the song For Youfrom the film’s soundtrack Fifty Shades Freedalso reached the top 10.
Payne also had an enormous talent for composition.
When he launched his solo career, he took the opportunity to collaborate with some of pop’s biggest songwriters, including Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.
“Writing for One Direction was a different process because you knew what young people wanted,” he once told the BBC.
“I love those songs, don’t get me wrong, but I knew why I was writing them and I knew what I was writing them for,” he added.
In his own productions he used to sing about topics such as depression, sex and breakups.
Him and the star Girls AloudCheryl, began a relationship in 2016 and had a son, Bear. The couple separated in 2018.
