The former president of the Republic, Alejandro Toledo, who is being investigated for the crime of collusion for allegedly having favored companies in tenders for the construction of the Peru-Brazil Interoceanic Road Corridor, made a request to the judges of the Judicial Branch at the conclusion of the oral trial against him.

“I ask that you please do justice. I want to tell you publicly that I am innocent, I never made any arrangement with Mr. Barata, much less with Mr. Maiman,” he said at first.

“I ask you please, that in the decision that you make, I have a very complicated health condition, I have cancer, heart problems and in a few months I will turn 80 years old, if this is going to continue, the only thing that “I ask you, please, let me defend myself from my home, I want to go to a private clinic… I ask you, please, let me die in my house, I thank you very much,” he added.

According to the Public Ministry, in sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceánica, the consortium made up of Odebrecht, Graña y Montero and JJ Camet e Ingenieros, managed to obtain the tender. Likewise, for section 4, the Intersur Consortium, made up of the companies Andrade Gutiérrez and Camargo Correo, Queiroz Galvão, was favored.

According to Jorge Barata’s confession to the Peruvian prosecutor’s office, Odebrecht paid at least US$20 million in bribes to the former president to obtain the award of sections 2 and 3 of the South Interoceanic Highway.

In addition, he would also have received another payment of 6 million for the Intersur consortium to win the tender for section 4 of the same road.

After arguments from the accused and conclusion of the trial, the Judiciary announced that the advance ruling (reading of sentence) against former President Alejandro Toledo and others for the Interoceánica case will be announced this Monday, October 21, at 02:00 pm.

It is worth noting that the Prosecutor’s Office ratified on Monday the 14th its request for more than 20 years in prison against Alejandro Toledo for the bribe of 35 million dollars that he received, according to the Public Ministry, from the company Odebrecht.
