CONEP: Although “no one wants to pay more taxes”, tax reform is for the “growth” of the country

CONEP: Aunque “nadie quiere pagar más impuestos”, reforma fiscal es para «crecimiento» del país

Celso Juan Marranzini, president of the National Council of Private Companies (CONEP), expressed his support for the tax reform proposed by the government of Luis Abinader, highlighting that this measure “will catapult the Dominican Republic to sustained growth with generation of employment and well-being” in the coming years.

Marranzini noted that both tax and labor reforms, which he refers to as “adjustments,” are interrelated and must be seen as part of a “nation pact” to achieve comprehensive progress.

According to Marranzini, it is necessary for all business sectors to assume the commitment to support this vision of the country, in which tax revenues translate into development and general well-being.

Recognizing that “no one wants to pay more taxes” due to “human nature,” Marranzini insisted that the government must explain to society that these tax modifications have a “productive purpose.”

The business leader stressed that from now on, the government must be more strategic when investing, ensuring that each peso used positively impacts the population. “It is increasingly difficult to find a peso in the economy to increase spending,” he stated.

Although he acknowledged that “it is going to be increasingly difficult to carry out fiscal reform,” Marranzini pointed out that this process must be continuous to reinvent the State and guarantee that the resources received are increased. In that sense, he described the announcement of the reform as positive.

In addition, Marranzini emphasized the importance of sectors such as education, which currently represents a quarter of the national budget, with more than 300 billion pesos allocated. In his opinion, the reform sought “is practically a third of educational spending.”

Finally, he highlighted that the tax reform includes measures to protect the most vulnerable sectors, which, according to him, “is the most important thing.”

These statements were offered in the Uno+Uno program:
