Alvin Holsey will replace Laura Richardson as head of Southern Command

Vice Admiral Alvin Holsey will assume leadership of the United States Southern Command (Southcom) on November 7, replacing Army General Laura J. Richardson, who will retire after more than four decades of military service.

Holsey’s appointment had already been confirmed by the United States Senate on September 24, thus consolidating his rise as leader of the aforementioned military structure, according to a press release published by the portal Infodefensa.com

The official who had been serving as deputy commander of Southcom has operational and strategic experience. He has served on “security” missions in the Middle East.

Holsey will take command with the need to strengthen his country’s security alliances, improve defense cooperation, and continue the fight against illicit activities, such as drug trafficking, that affect regional stability.

The Southern Command is one of the six geographic unified commands of the United States, which is responsible for conducting military operations in Latin America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
