In five years, 3.3 million fell into poverty

In the last five years, 3.3 million Peruvians fell into a situation of povertymainly in urban areas, revealed a study by the World Bank and the Peruvian Institute of Economics (IPE).

The report indicated that in the urban area, poverty went from 14.6% to 26.4% between 2019 and 2023. In this way, a 15-year decline was recorded. Urban poverty increased in all regions, increasing in that period by at least 10 percentage points in 14 regions, and doubling in eight: Áncash, Arequipa, Ica, Lima provinces, Moquegua, Tacna, Tumbes and Ucayali.

This change, according to the IPE, has turned poverty into a more urban phenomenon, concentrating 73.1% of the poor population in cities compared to 56.7% in 2019.

“This concentration of people could have been better anticipated since it was already a phenomenon in progress in 2019, and is now an almost general phenomenon at the national level: the number of regions with a concentration of poverty in urban areas of less than 50% went from 12 to 5. What’s more, in 2023, 7 out of every 10 people in poverty will be in urban areas in 12 of the 25 regions, 5 regions more than in 2019,” the IPE stated.

In this sense, he pointed out that it is necessary to take actions, taking into account that anemia and malnutrition have increased. Only three regions (Amazonas, Apurímac and San Martín) managed to reduce poverty significantly in the last five years. The weak dynamism of economic activity limited the recovery of formal employment, affected during the pandemic. This scenario, added to inflationary pressures, contributed to the increase in poverty levels in much of the country.

Likewise, he insisted that work must be done to close gaps in access and quality of basic services, since it prevents adequately protecting people in vulnerable situations and taking advantage of the productive potential of the regions, in strategic sectors such as mining, agriculture and tourism. Also adding that territorial differences in competitiveness are not only evident between regions but also within them.
