MEXICO CITY, Mexico.- Journalists Jany González and Mario Vallejoof News 23were nominated for a Suncoast Regional Emmy for the report Miami in the spotlightabout the ways in which the Cuban regime has infiltrated its agents in Miami.
The Suncoast Regional Emmy, which honors excellence in journalism throughout Florida, has among the nominees to 12 members of News 23including reporters, producers, cameramen and writers. The winners will be announced on December 7 in Orlando.
Miami in the spotlight was included in the Politics/Government News category. The report explores the mechanisms that the Cuban regime has used to infiltrate a large number of spies into multiple government agencies within the United States.
Among the entities where agents of the Cuban Government have been placed, the Department of State (DOS), immigration offices, universities, government media and Cuban exile organizations are mentioned in the report.
One of the most relevant cases has been that of former diplomat Víctor Manuel Rocha, who worked for the Castro regime for 40 years, until, at the end of 2023, he was arrested and recently sentenced to 15 years in prison.
It has also transcended the infiltration of Juan Pablo Roque and René González, who were part of the organization Brothers to the Rescuebut in reality they were spies who gave information to the Cuban regime.
In February 1996, three small planes from the organization took off from Opa-Locka with eight exiles on board, in order to deliver aid to the rafters who were trying to flee the island. However, two of the aircraft were shot down, revealing the role played by spies.
Also this year, Spy Islanda series by journalist Juan Manuel Cao, revealed recordings and information about operations by Cuban agents in the United States.
The journalistic investigative work, which was broadcast after the capture of the former diplomat Victor Manuel Rochaconvicted of spying for Cuba For four decades, it exhibited unpublished material on the actions of Cuban intelligence agents and demonstrates that the regime has come to militarily attack itself to build a victimist stance.
The material rescues the case of a Cuban intelligence officer in New York who exchanged secret information with his agent in Miami.
Cao and the investigation team that managed to capture the spy’s conversations obtained the testimony of the then Cuban ambassador to the UN, currently exiled in the United States.
