18-year-old Nepalese breaks world mountaineering record

He Nepalese Nima Rinji Sherpa, At the age of 18, he became to date the youngest mountaineer to climb the 14 eight-thousanders in the world and thus set a new record. The young climber was hailed as a hero by his family and fans upon his return to Kathmandu on Monday.

He climbed the 8,027-meter-high summit of Shisha Pangma in Tibet on October 9, achieving his goal of being on top of the 14 highest mountains in the world.

“I am very happy,” Nima Rinji Sherpa told the AFP news agency as he was greeted with great applause at the airport in the Nepalese capital. He hugged his family members as fans presented him with traditional Buddhist scarves and flower garlands. They welcomed more mountaineers who have already scaled the summits of the 14 highest mountains in the world.

The new record holder belongs to a family of mountaineers who have achieved several records and runs the largest mountain expedition company in Nepal. He began his first high mountain excursions at the age of 16.

Climbing the 14 “eight thousand” is considered the highlight of the life of the ambitious mountaineers. TAll the peaks are located in the Himalayas and the Karakoram mountain range and, therefore, in Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet and India.
