The fifth Brazilian Air Force (FAB) flight that rescued Brazilians from Lebanon landed at 6:06 am this Monday (14) at the São Paulo Air Base (BASP), in Guarulhos. There were 220 repatriates and two pets on board, on the flight that is part of Operation “Raízes do Cedro”, coordinated by the federal government.
Started on October 2, the operation has already repatriated a total of 1,105 Brazilians and 14 pets from Lebanon. According to the FAB, 43 tons of donations were also transported, such as hospital supplies and basic food baskets, to help victims in Lebanon.
The repatriation logistics involve the use of Brazilian Air Force aircraft and servers and intense coordination work by Itamaraty. According to the federal government, the Brazilian community in Lebanon has around 20 thousand people, of which around 3 thousand have expressed a desire to return to Brazil.
The repatriation actions were determined by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva since the worsening of the conflict in the country, with massive aerial bombings by Israel against Lebanese cities. The bombings are an offshoot of the Israeli military campaign in Gaza StripPalestinian territory occupied by Tel Aviv.
Just as Yemeni and Iraqi militias have launched attacks against Israel or Tel Aviv’s allies in retaliation for the bombings in Gaza, the so-called Lebanese resistance – a coalition of seven political-military groups led by Hezbollah – has been carrying out attacks against Israel since the October 7, also in solidarity with Gaza.
