Brugada declares October 12 as Day of Indigenous Resistance in CDMX

In the Town Hall of the old City Hall Palace, Brugada highlighted that the indigenous peoples are and will be the true owners of the lands where what is now known as Mexico City and its metropolitan area were settled.

He considered it important to put aside imposed commemorations and said that, through this declaration, the struggle of indigenous peoples against the conquerors and the crimes committed hundreds of years ago is recognized.

“The resistance of indigenous peoples is a fundamental part of our history and it is crucial to understand its importance, because in doing so we also honor the invaluable contributions that these communities have made to the formation of our history and our identity,” he declared.

He highlighted that it is the country’s indigenous people who have been a fundamental part of the history of Mexico and the initiators of the struggles for Independence, the Revolution and the rights of Mexicans in different areas.

However, despite the struggles, for decades the native towns and neighborhoods have been the target of oppression and discrimination, which is why it was considered important that this date recognizes the indigenous struggle and resistance.

“Mexico City recognizes October 12 of each year as the commemoration of the Day of Indigenous Resistance, as part of the fulfillment of the historical demands of the indigenous peoples, neighborhoods and resident indigenous communities,” he noted.

The head of Government also endorsed the declaration of Mexico City as a pluricultural, plurilingual and pluriethnic city, where, in addition to its native towns and neighborhoods, at least 55 of the 70 indigenous peoples of the nation live.

She announced that specific actions will soon be announced to make visible, promote, protect and guarantee substantive equality, mainly for indigenous women through various public policies.

Clara Brugada joined the call made by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President Claudia Sheinbaum to ask that Spain apologize to Mexico for the Conquest.
