Nicaragua's break with Israel brings us closer to terrorist countries, opponents say

The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo announced yesterday the breaking of diplomatic relations with Israel, after one year of the war between the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and the Holy Land, accusing the Middle Eastern country of causing genocide, crimes of against humanity against the Palestinian population. Nicaragua has also been accused of crimes against humanity before the United Nations.

“In permanent solidarity with the people and Government of Palestine, with the peoples who suffer martyrdom, destruction and barbarism and in strict accordance with international law and the conventions that govern civilized relations between States and Governments of the world, the Government of “The Republic of Nicaragua breaks all diplomatic relations with the fascist Government of Israel,” says the statement issued by the regime.

For former Sandinista ambassador to the OAS Arturo McFields, Nicaragua is increasingly further away from democracy and closer to the terrorism of Iran, Hezbolla and Hamas. The Ortega government has broken relations three times with Israel, in the heat of the revolution in 1982, after coming to power again in 2010 and now in 2024, one year after the Hamas attack on Israel that led to the outbreak of war.

«It is bad news for the people of Nicaragua, it is bad news for the believing people, and it also aligns us more as a country with the “axis of evil” that is made up of countries like Iran, Syria, North Korea, Afghanistan, increasingly far from democracy and closer to international terrorism,” said McFields, who is currently in exile in the United States after resigning as ambassador and becoming a critic of the dictatorship.

“The Ortega regime is the most shameful example of fascism and genocide in the region,” reacted an anonymous opposition politician. Furthermore, he maintains “Ortega is a friend of those genocidal dictators who mistreat their people.”

Diplomatic break with Israel is political propaganda, experts say

For the Nicaraguan sociologist Óscar René Vargas, this act of diplomatic rupture with Israel is nothing more than an act of “propaganda” by Ortega to remain current in the international media. Vargas also compared this fact with the one carried out at the beginning of 2024 when Nicaragua presented a complaint against Germany in the International Court of Justice for supporting Israel in what it considers a “genocide” of the Palestinian people, without achieving any results.

A similar opinion is held by former Sandinista guerrilla Dora María Tellez, who affirms that this is more propaganda by the Ortega Murillo dictatorship to “simulate” a commitment to condemn human rights violations and crimes against humanity. “I say simulation because they have also committed crimes against humanity, serious violations of human rights and the repression of terror to which they keep the people of Nicaragua (subjected),” says Tellez.
