Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office announces arrest warrant against former President Evo Morales

AREQUIPA, Peru – An arrest warrant will be issued against former Bolivian President Evo Morales to testify before the Public Ministry for his alleged participation in a case of human trafficking and statutory rape.

“What corresponds is that, to issue the arrest warrant since they (Morales and the other investigated) have been duly notified without any violation of any of their rights,” said Bolivian prosecutor Sandra Gutiérrez, quoted by the EFE agency.

Evo Morales would have committed the crimes with a minor with whom he supposedly had a child, states the complaint that the Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office has in its possession.

The victim allegedly belonged to “Generation Evo”, a youth group created by the former president during his Presidency (2006-2019).

Morales was summoned to testify this Friday in Tarija, but his defense presented a memorial not to attend, alleging that there is a constitutional ruling that orders the case to be dealt with in the central region of Cochabamba, where he lives. the former president.

In this regard, prosecutor Gutiérrez explained that “the arrest warrant is going to be issued so that they can appear to present their informative statement” and that they will also respond to the memorials presented by Morales’ defense.

Likewise, he highlighted that “no rights are being violated,” as Morales and his defense lawyers have assured, and stated that “everything is being done in a transparent manner and in accordance with the legal norm.”

Coming from an Andean community, but from an Aymara family, Evo Morales began his career in public life after moving to the department of Cochabamba, where he established himself as a union leader in the coca industry that would help him win his first presidential candidacy in 2005. .

Morales advertisement in September 2023 through X, formerly Twitter, who will once again seek the presidency of the country, after having held the position for 14 years.

“We have decided to accept the requests of our militancy and of so many sisters and brothers who attend rallies throughout the country to be a candidate for the presidency of our beloved Bolivia,” Morales indicated in the publication.

During his fourth consecutive term, the leftist leader resigned from his position in the midst of a political crisis. After spending a year in exile, he returned to the country in 2020.
