Extortion in construction reaches figures of up to S/ 1,200 million, according to Capeco

Guido Valdivia, Executive Director of the Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco), warned about the serious situation facing the construction sector due to the citizen insecurity and extortion.

The police officer, who has dismantled organizations linked to drug trafficking, must now carry out this task as if he did not have the experience he is known for.

Despite having alerted the Government about the criminal organizations operating in the sector, crime has not only continued, but has spread to other areas due to the lack of effective measures.

“We have had this problem in the sector for 20 years. We know about it and we have brought it to the attention of the authorities. These are estimated figures because there is no precise calculation, but taking into account the construction GDP, we are talking about a magnitude that could reach from S/ 1,000 to S/ 1,200 million,” he declared in RPP.

“The high rate of organized crime, robberies, thefts, kidnappings and extortions are seriously affecting the country and the population,” said Mario Reyna.

The Executive Director of Capeco also criticized the inaction of the authorities during the last 20 years, pointing out that multiple interior ministers have passed through office without implementing a lasting strategy to curb insecurity.

He also pointed out the lack of action by key entities such as the Prosecutor’s Office, the Judiciary, the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Housing.

In that sense, Valdivia called to strengthen the police forces with elite equipment and advanced technology. “It is impossible for 7 or 8 police officers to handle the problems that arise in more than 3,000 construction sites simultaneously,” he warned.

Finally, he reported that the Civil Construction Federation has called a strike for next October 24.
