The IPEA Monthly Indicator of Apparent Consumption of Industrial Goods grew by 2% in December 2021 compared to November, in the seasonally adjusted series. Among the components of apparent consumption, while domestic production for the domestic market increased by 2.1% in December, imports of industrial goods dropped by 1.6% in the last month of the year.
The data were released today (23) by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea).
In comparison with December 2020, the indicator fell by 1.7%. In the 12-month period, it ended the year 2021 with a rise of 7.2%. In the fourth moving quarter of the year, the indicator that measures domestic demand for industrial goods – through non-exported domestic industrial production plus imports – dropped 2.6%.
According to Ipea, in the analysis of the major economic categories, all segments presented growth, with the exception of the segment of semi and non-durable consumer goods, which registered a drop of 0.7%. The capital goods segment stood out positively: an increase of 8.4%. In the inter-annual comparison, all segments registered a decrease, with the exception of intermediate goods, which increased by 0.4%.
“Regarding the production classes, domestic demand for goods from the manufacturing industry increased 1.9% in December, while the growth of mineral extraction was 0.3%, after a strong increase of 27.9% in the previous period. The sectorial analysis shows that 13 of the 22 segments showed positive variation. The highlight was the vehicle segment, with an increase of 20.3% at the margin. In the inter-annual comparison, five segments registered growth, especially oil and derivatives and chemical products, with increases of 8.8% and 2.4%, respectively”, says Ipea.
