After the suspension of the prosecutor Marita Barreto of the Special Anti-Corruption Team (Efficop), prosecutors from the same working group commented on the decision.

There were 19 lawyers who signed the document showing support for the magistrate and ruling on the suspension of Barreto as coordinator of Eficcop.
“We support and ratify the hard work that prosecutor Marita Barreto has been carrying out (…) since the creation of Eficcop, who has led the investigations against alleged members of criminal organizations with political powers (…),” it reads. at the beginning of the statement.
In addition, they indicated that they consider the measure taken by the Control Authority of the Public Ministry to be disproportionate. They added that no “real, objective danger or concrete hindrance to the investigation work” has been substantiated.
They also warned that the decision made “weakens” Efficop to face corruption cases such as ‘Los Waykis en la Sombra’, ‘MarkaGroup’, ‘Anguía Case’, ‘The Reconstruction Operators’, ‘The Untouchables of Corruption’, ‘Shadow Advisors’, etc.
SUSPENSION OF MARITA BARRETO
The National Control Authority (ANC) of the Public Ministry decided to suspend prosecutor Marita Barreto, coordinator of Eficcop, for six months.
The measure was taken after prosecutor Barreto acknowledged that she had met with journalist Carlos Paredes on different occasions. However, the Eficcop coordinator denied having leaked information reserved with Paredes.
Regarding the decision taken by the ANC, the senior prosecutor denied having shared information with the aforementioned journalist. He also denied having ordered provincial prosecutor Naomi Bustillos to denounce the director of the “Contracorriente” program.
