Press Council rejects deadline "image terrorism" coined by Dina Boluarte

The Peruvian Press Council issued a statement in which they reject the use of the term “image terrorism” that the president Dina Boluarte used during one of her recent speeches to refer to what she considers “fake news.”

“President Dina Boluarte and other public officials seek to discredit the work of journalism,” the statement reads.

“This organization also condemns that other politicians have defended this irresponsible phrase. Parliamentarian Waldemar Cerrón, whose fugitive brother Vladimir Cerrón is the subject of journalistic investigations that have revealed serious cases of corruption, assured that there is “press terrorism”, while the head of the Cabinet, Gustavo Adrianzén, stated that “we cannot deny that false news is spread [que] Not only do they offend, but they have [sic] a purpose: […] generate chaos and destabilization,” they add.

The Press Council emphasized that these statements affect the opinion of any person, journalist or not, considering them as a crime “that would destroy one of the most important fundamental rights: freedom of expression.”

As is known, President Dina Boluarte used the platform of a public ceremony to refer to current issues and attack her detractors instead of answering questions from the press, to which she has not spoken for 92 days.

During a ceremony in the Plaza Grau del Callao, where the 145th anniversary of the Combat of Angamos was commemorated, the president dedicated herself to promoting the economic achievements of her government, insisting that she will defeat crime and, as is customary, confront to his critics, this time coining the term “image terrorism.”
