Government of Colombia agrees to meet with the ELN to evaluate a return to dialogue

The dialogue between the Government of Colombia and the ELN came to a halt after a guerrilla attack in the department of Arauca in September

The Government of Colombia agreed this Thursday, October 10, to meet with the delegation of the National Liberation Army (ELN) to evaluate the reactivation of the dialogue process that was paralyzed in September after a guerrilla attack in the department of Arauca.

“We accept the invitation to hold a meeting that allows us to address all these issues and resume our dialogue in search of generating the peace that Colombian society demands of us,” the delegation of the Government of Colombia indicated in a statement. Gustavo Petro.

The guerrilla proposed a meeting with the Government of Colombia “to examine the crisis in which the process finds itself with the presence of the guarantor countries and permanent companions.” This despite “the current situation of non-compliance” with the agreements between the parties.

The ELN reported that the Colombian government refused to rectify the non-compliance and that it even rejected the ceasefire extension that the ELN made “generously.” They argued that the Army deployed “warlike measures” against the militiamen.

On August 3, a temporary ceasefire between the Government and the ELN concluded, which had lasted for more than a year, although the guerrilla refused to approve another extension, considering that the authorities had failed to comply with certain signed commitments.

The freezing of the dialogue was made by the Government of Colombia after the attack against a military unit located in Puerto Jordán, in the department of Arauca, in which three soldiers died and about 30 were injured.
