Prosecutor against Organized Crime questions the premier and asks him to be well informed

Paro de Transportistas.

A few minutes after listening to Premier Gustavo Adrianzén questioning the work of prosecutors in the fight against insecurity, Jorge Chávez Cotrina, coordinating prosecutor against Organized Crime, spoke forcefully.

In dialogue with Canal N he said that “It is not fair for the Chief of Staff to say that prosecutors are not working. “I think it was due to lack of knowledge, I would ask you to better inform yourself before giving information of this nature to the population.”

“The premier had an interview where he stated that they requested the creation of prosecutors against transport extortion and stated that they have done nothing. Even more false, I tell you that you should be better informed, we are working with the Gorex Group. It is not fair for the prime minister to say that prosecutors are not working,” he stressed.

The prosecutor assured that investigations and coordination with the Police are already being carried out, but mentioned that both the Prosecutor’s Office and the PNP need a larger budget to effectively confront organized crime and extortion. “The Public Ministry always works with the budget on a knife’s edge, however, with what we have we can continue working. We cannot start crying.”

The prosecutor said that the Police must have more budget to be able to work efficiently: “To provide you with the necessary budget but at once”

At another time, he expressed his disagreement with the new rule that grants the Peruvian National Police the power to direct preliminary investigations on its own initiative and considered that the law is contradictory and unconstitutional in some aspects.

Chávez Cotrina stressed the importance of investigations continuing under the direction of the Public Ministry, since it is the entity with the jurisdiction to initiate criminal actions. Given this, he announced that a claim of unconstitutionality will be filed before the Constitutional Court to correct these problems.
