The measure was taken after prosecutor Barreto acknowledged that she had met with journalist Carlos Paredes on different occasions. However, the Eficcop coordinator denied having leaked information reserved with Paredes.
Regarding the decision taken by the ANC, the senior prosecutor denied having shared information with the aforementioned journalist. He also denied having ordered provincial prosecutor Naomi Bustillos to denounce the director of the “Contracorriente” program.
“The alleged facts are not consistent with the disproportionate measure of removing me from Eficcop (…) this measure contributes to destabilizing the work and cases that the Special Team is in charge of against senior State officials,” the statement reads.
In that sense, Barreto described the measure as “arbitrary and disproportionate” and reported that he will appeal the decision ordering its suspension.
On October 2, the Public Ministry began a 60-day preliminary investigation into prosecutor Marita Barreto for the alleged crime against the public administration, in the form of improper identity disclosure.
This, after journalist Carlos Paredes denounced that the Eficcop coordinator had leaked confidential information about an investigation to congressman Guillermo Bermejo.
