Unlike the January 2022 process, when 15 candidates registered in one day, yesterday no candidate registered to compete for the national leadership of the Petroleum Workers Union of the Mexican Republic (STPRM), union sources confirmed.

Zaragoza Street, in the Guerrero neighborhood, remained practically empty and the classic style of the internal processes of the oil union was absent, with the mobilization of hundreds of workers and the batucadas.

There were only two patrols from the Secretariat of Citizen Security that guarded the union headquarters, after the fight that occurred on September 26 between union members and alleged dissident workers led by Rubén Choreño, a fight that left at least seven injured.

The process to renew the general secretary and the General Executive Committee (CEG), headed by Ricardo Aldana Prieto, began on Monday with the installation of the national electoral commission. From yesterday until tomorrow, Thursday the 10th, the registration of aspiring candidates will take place in Mexico City, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Union of Petroleum Workers of the Mexican Republic (STPRM) proposed that the election be held in person in 292 polling stations that will be installed in around 400 Petróleos Mexicanos work centers, including the Central Sur High Specialty Hospital.

Echoes of Pemexgate

Aldana Prieto, who succeeded the late leader Carlos Romero Deschamps in January 2022, will seek reelection as the general secretary. The campaigns will begin on October 14 and will conclude on the 26th; The next day will be an electoral ban.

The day will be supervised by the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration, while the electoral commission will be responsible for the process until the final counting of the votes. From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 28, voting will take place and the results will be known that same day.

Aldana Prieto – who along with Romero Deschamps was involved in the resource diversion scandal known as Pemexgate– won the January 2022 election with almost 45 thousand votes over the rest of the 24 opposition candidates.
