The Electoral Court confirmed the election of former governor of Rio de Janeiro Luiz Fernando Pezão to the mayor of Piraí (RJ).
On Sunday (6), Pezão received 58.58% (10,714) of the votes in the first round, but the candidacy was sub judice due to a conviction for administrative improbity that prevented the candidacy.
The confirmation of Pezão’s election to command Piraí city hall was updated this Tuesday (8) in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) system, which publishes the total number of votes.
The former governor became eligible after an injunction to suspend the conviction for misconduct. The injunction was handed down on Thursday (3) by the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) André Mendonça.
With the minister’s decision, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) overturned the first instance decision that barred Pezão’s candidacy.
On September 2, judge Kyle Marcos Santos Menezes accepted the state Public Prosecutor’s Office’s request for impeachment, proposed by the Agir party and candidate Arthur Tutuca (PRD), who also ran for mayor.
After the decision, Pezão spoke out on social media and stated that he had always trusted the justice system.
“I always told all of you that I trusted the justice system. The 10,714 voters of Piraí who trusted the proposals and our word can rest assured, on January 1st, we will take over as mayor”, he declared.
