Gustavo Petro, current president of Colombia, surprised all the residents of the country after a strong message published on his personal X account where he assured that the “coup d’état”.
Apparently this situation would have arisen after the decision of the National Electoral Council to open an investigation into financial irregularities presented during his campaign for the country’s presidency.
Why did Petro refer to a coup d’état?
As indicated by the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, This event would occur when there is a “sudden removal and replacement, by force or other unconstitutional means, of the person holding political power,” they hold.

Taking into account this delicate situation, Petro Urrego indicated on his social networks: “All popular organizations in the country must enter into a permanent assembly. The time for widespread mobilization of the Colombian people has arrived. The constitutional president of Colombia elected by popular vote orders the public forces not to raise a single weapon against the people. “I ask the diplomatic corps for a full meeting to explain to the world why what the CNE has done by majority is a blow against the comprehensive immunity of the president and against the popular vote and the law,” he remarked.
“I ask my lawyers to confront the IACHR ruling in my favor that it has been completely violated,” He stated in a post that generated a lot of impact on X (ex Twitter).

Apparently and with information provided by the CNE, Petro’s electoral campaign did not report at the respective time on the contributions in the first electoral round nor on the concepts related to propaganda expenses and electoral witnesses. It is added that in the second round there would also be violations related to the limit of the established amounts.

It should be clarified that the representative of the Colombian left would be exposed to a financial fine but would not lose his position. However, specialists in the matter maintain that the organization could send a copy of said investigation to the Lower House with the objective that the highest leader of Colombians be called for impeachment.
