Dina Boluarte’s tense relationship with the press

Dina Boluarte

The president of the Republic, Dina Boluartehas maintained a stony silence with the media for 3 months. The last time the president answered questions from the press was on July 8, on the occasion of her trip to China. 93 days without responding to the media.

Since her historic and turbulent inauguration as the first female president of the Republic, Boluarte reiterated on several occasions that her government was not the same as that of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo. However, although they have tried to distance themselves from the ‘professor’, both agree on a rejection and even aggressive attitude towards the media.

His brother’s scandal, Nicanor Boluartewhich was revealed by the press, as well as that of Rolex watches, caused the president to maintain a confrontational stance with the media.

In November 2023, after a report by Cuarto Poder that revealed meetings between Nicanor Boluarte and people who obtained contracts with the State, the president defended her brother, ensuring that he can receive “whoever he wants.”

“And furthermore, that media outlet dared to compare this Government, of this honest and transparent woman who works for Peru, with the previous Government. That comparison is too daring, from my point of view,” said the head of State.

In July of this year, the head of state blamed the media for only spreading “biased news” and not the “good” things about her administration. During the signing of contracts for the construction of two hospitals, Boluarte asked the press to “help repeat it 24 hours a day, just as they do with biased news.”

During a visit to Amazonas in September, the head of state had an impasse with a journalist who was dismayed at the magnitude of the disasters caused by the forest fires. “President, my tears have traveled internationally to ask for your presence.”

However, Boluarte responded bluntly that he does not need his tears. “I don’t need your tears sir, we are here serving you,” he rebuked him.

Likewise, days after the impasse in Amazonas, the president attacked again. This time, Boluarte responded to press complaints about the presence of the presidential vehicle near a condominium on Asia Beach in February of this year, where the National Police carried out an operation to capture the fugitive Vladimir Cerrón.

Boluarte described Punto Final’s revelations about the presidential vehicle as “sinister lies.” Not satisfied with that, she assured that they are “horror stories” fabricated by “Chucky and his girlfriend.”

“They are saying that the president’s ‘chest’ took the fugitive Vladimir Cerrón through Ica. Sinister minds. It seems like Chucky and his girlfriend are fabricating these horror stories. To Peru I tell you, the presidential ‘chest’, the vehicles assigned to the use of the President of the Republic are for exclusive use. The fugitive Vladimir Cerrón never got into any of the vehicles,” he noted.

Image terrorism

The head of state sharpened her words for the commemoration ceremony for the Angamos Battle and attacked again. This time the president, using her characteristic quip, called fake news “image terrorism” or “fake news“made by those who, according to him, seek to “create instability, the favorable scenario to hinder the growth of the economy.”

Boluarte even used the phrase of the Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, to compare the people who according to her commit the newest crime of “image terrorism.”

“We have to fight against a new evil, a new threat in the world, the war of lies, the fake newsthe fake news created in order to carry out image terrorism, an old method that totalitarians applied with their motto ‘lie lie, something remains,’ he said.

The president is not the only one who has carried out attacks on the media. Various ministers of his government have insulted him with disqualifications and have even sent notarized letters to journalists. According to the National Association of Journalists, at least 251 attacks on the press have been reported so far this year. Most of these come from authorities.

“There is not a week that the Executive does not attack journalism,” said the ANP after Boluarte’s speech during the Angamos Combat.
