The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) decided to convict the former mayor of Rio Marcelo Crivella for abuse of political and economic power in the 2020 elections.
The decision, which was handed down last Tuesday (8), makes the politician ineligible until 2028. An appeal can be made to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
According to the TRE, the decision refers to the process in which Crivella was accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of using the public machine to create a “slush fund” for his re-election campaign.
The case became known as “Bribery HQ” and allegedly involved around R$50 million in bribes. The alleged scheme involved the enticement of businesspeople and fraud in bids, according to the indictment.
The former mayor’s defense declared that it will appeal the decision.
