Miguel Ponce

The Coordination of the Social, Popular, Peasant and Student Movement of San Francisco de Macorís ratified today the call for a municipal strike in San Francisco de Macorís, for next Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2, after failing, due to lack of agreements, a meeting between popular leaders and local authorities and officials of the Central Government, held this Tuesday morning.

In a meeting that sought to reach agreements on the list of demands, and that took place in the Governor’s Office of the Duarte province, it was attended by the authorities, Ana Xiomara Cortes Martes, Governor; Olmedo Caba Romano, Director of INDHRI; Ramón Díaz, from the Commission for Provincial Development; Siquió Ng, Municipal Mayor; Franklin Romero, Senator of the province and Pedro Moronta, director of Edenorte. Professor Miguel, General Director of the UASD-San Francisco and Father Isaac, representing the Catholic Church, were also present.

The representation of the Popular Movement was headed by Raúl Monegro, national spokesman for FALPO; Odilín Morel, from the Union of Neighborhood Councils; Yoel Martínez, president of the Federation of Dominican Students; César Trinidad, from the Mama Tingó Peasant Federation; Reimyn Vargas, for FELABEL and José Ariel Paulino.

“We went to the meeting thinking that the authorities would propose some solutions to the demands that motivate the call for a municipal strike, but they did not propose anything concrete, as if they did not know well all the demands from before being government. The people no longer believe in the promises of the PRM government, it happens that the wind always blows them away. The Social and Popular Movement and all the francomacorisanos want hands on the works as a response”, stated Raúl Monegro after the meeting.

The national spokesman for FALPO added: “We do not see the political will on the part of the government of Luis Abinader and the PRM to attend to the needs of the municipality of San Francisco de Macorís; in promises and announcements of work, the present authorities are champions, but to date, they have not fulfilled what they have promised or even a single one of the heartfelt demands of the people”.

And he added: “We have no faith in a government that promises and does not deliver. The way it is going, working at a snail’s pace on some works, and most of those announced more than a year ago without starting, we have no hope that, if they don’t start now, in the two years that the PRM has left in power, can comply. However, we are open to dialogue, but we believe that the President of the Republic should send a commission of competent ministers, with solutions, in order to show his willingness to meet the needs of the Franco-Macorisan people”.

In the late afternoon of this Tuesday, when there are only six days left before the start of the 24-hour strike day, the Popular, Student and Peasant Movement of San Francisco de Macorís ratified the so-called stoppage of all commercial, educational and transportation activities. , on Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of next week, throughout the municipality: “before the deafness of the officials before the popular clamor!,

The Social, Popular, Peasant and Student Movement of San Francisco de Macorís, headed by FALPO, among other organizations, demands the elimination of high fuel taxes and the elimination of the mafia controls, so that prices fall; the reduction of basic necessities for an affordable family basket; the sanitation of the Cañada Grande, which crosses the city; the construction of a culture square; the San Francisco de Macorís highway to Río San Juan; construction of a Nursery School, Library and other complementary works of the UASD-San Francisco; transportation for college students; construction of sidewalks and curbs and paving of streets; housing project to relocate the residents of Barrio Azul; completion of the Regional Hospital for Medical Specialties; construction of schools, among others.
